1980 Johnson 15HP Carb Problem?

Hey guys,

Got my 1980 Johnson 15HP out on the lake for the fist time. Starts on the first or second pull every time and idles just fine. When I try to go to full throttle it will bog down and want to stall, but will run fine at a lower throttle position. The motor sat for 2-3 years before I got it, so I'm thinking there's probably some gunk in the carb. Any thoughts? Also the idle adjuster is not installed in the case, due to the fact that the knob cracked. Don't think that has anything to do with it, but thought I would throw it out there just incase.

Most likely dirty main jet. Time for a carb kit and cleaning.

I agree with the above. If your talking about the knob on the port side your right, that has nothing to do with the carb. or performance of the engine. It is simply a slow speed cruise control. Very very handy if you like to troll but of little use otherwise. Get that carb. cleaned and you'll be flying. You should look at the Top Secret File at the top of this forum for other advice on what to do with a motor that has been sitting. A new impeller would be most important and getting the OMC service manual would be right up there IMO. Enjoy. Rick.
