1980 Johnson 25hp netural saftey swith can yoou bypass it

My old 80 model Johnson had some rust on the bracket that the gear selector rolls in to depress the netural saftey switch when in netural and broke off, is it possible to bypass the switch? If so how? It is a real big pain to have to reach around and find the remaining nub and pull it out by hand to start it. Any feed back would be a great help. Thanks in advance for any who answer.

I thought I would bypass mine last week, but nobody in this forum will let you get away with that. It is there for a reason, fix it right instead of regretting it later.

I would love to fix it the right way the only problem is I have been looking for one of these brackets for about 6 weeks now and have came up with nothing other then someone telling me to try to find some one with a junker they are parting out. But thanks for the concern I can understand not advising anyone to do anything that eliminates a safety feature and I guess I will just have to keep looking or break down and replace the old beast with a new motor. Its been a good one but it is starting to look and act its age.

What are you looking for, the shifter interlock bar? Shouldn't be a problem. Go to http://shop.evinrude.com/ and order a new one.
