Hi guys.

I am a senior member on a few other non-boating forums, so I know how crucial the "search" button is. After about 75 different threads, I'm beat! Maybe someone here can help????

My newly acquired '80 Johnson 85hp likes to idle a bit high. I do not have the tach hooked up yet, so no specific numbers just yet.... If I take a quick zip around the lake at WOT, after it warms up of course, then throw it in neutral, she'll idle back down till I shut here off. Also, if I manually move the linkage to the bump when I have the high idle condition, it settles down, and idles smoothly. It seems the linkage has issues with returning. It it appears to be lubed up, and not really stiff.....

Am I missing something?

Thanks!

If the throttle cable adjustment under the cowling is not exactly right, you can have that problem. Make sure when the throttle handle is returned to neutral, that the throttle cable pushes the spark handle rearward. The screw on that handle (with the rubber tip) should come to a firm rest on the powerhead. If it does not, check/move the throttle cable adjuster screw at the front inside of the cowling so that it does. On the other hand, you want to insure that the carb butterflies still open fully when the trottle handle is full forward. This is all part of the procedure called sync-and-link, a carb adjustment detailed in the service manual.

Thank You.

Now that I know the term for it, I may be able to do a bit more searching, while I find a manual....
