Hi guys,
I have read hundreds of your posts and replies, and am still a little clueless about how to get the lower end completely off of my motor. You guys sure sound like you know your stuff, but I'm a little stupid when it comes to motors. I guess I should stick to pounding nails! I want to buy a shop manual for my 1980 Johnson 60 - anyone have a preference??? I have several problems that I need to address and will feel more comfortable having a manual to sit on while I work.

Anyone know how to adjust the reverse gear in this motor? Forward works fine - replaced the cable - nuckles are tapping for reverse, but will not engage - cable maxed out. This "deal" is beginning to be frustrating.
Thanks Guys !!!!!!!!!!

Hello Dadstoy
I think inexpirenced is a better thing to say. Thats OK everybody was once. It sounds like your shift problem is a minor adjustment of your new cable. As far as manuals go, the OEM (factory manual) is best. I also think all the after market manual are very good also. I use both. I use the after market books out in the shop and keep my OEMs safe in the house. If I trash the after market I can always run and get another. The problem, I think most guys have with the after market books is the fact they cover a range of models and sizes of motors. They may have instructions how to adjust three different carboraters on the same page. I guess this is confusing to some. I find it handy everything I need to know in one book.

Dadstoy,I don't want to confuse you before you get your manual, but if you want to attempt the procedure for adjusting your shift linkage here's what you can do.Locate the shift cable under engine compartment. The linkage from it will lead to a shift arm. This shift arm is a shaft that has a 90 degree bend and attaches to shift linkage by way of a pin. This should be readily accessed on the starboard side of engine.Remove pin and manually actuating shift arm locate forward ,reverse , and nuetral positions of lower unit gears. You may have to have someone spin prop slowly or you can use your foot if you have some imagination. Finally shift into what you know and can confirm by prop freedom is "nuetral" position. Now ,lift shift linkage back up to shift arm as to reassemble and note position of pin hole.If it is not aligned where you can insert pin easily adjust trunion nut on shift cable until this pin hole is aligned.Insert pin with its washers and cotter and you're finished. Now you can test shift lever for proper operation. If you are unable to fix shift problem with this procedure you likely have a problem with your shift cable or mechanism in lower unit.Hope this helps.
Oh, and welcome to iboats.

www.theoutboardwizard.com Get a OMC manual for YOUR motor, I just wasted $42.00 on a Clymers manual that covered a variety of years; then missed the repair I bought it for. :( http://www.boaterssupply.com/default.asp This is also a great site for exploded view of parts. Just check your brand in the top left corner; they go back to 1980, too. ;)

Hi guys thanks for the replies - I'll buy a manual when the holidays are over and I have money in my checking account !!!!!!!!!!!

OB - I read your reply and have allready done the things you have listed - the cable adjustment is maxed out. It will not push the linkage any farther back. This problem only occurrs when the motor is running - when I put it in gear in the driveway there is enough resistance on the prop that I can turn the fly wheel by pushing on the prop. I was wondering if I can adjust the internal linkage by loosening the adjustment screw on the linkage shaft on the rear of the motor under the carbs. It is a small 3/8 (approx) hex head that appears to be an adjustment bolt. Do you know what I am referring to??? Am I right????

To top this off, now theres fuel and oil mix pouring out into the water from the top side of the exhaust section and the motor is running rough at low rpm's.

please help - I'm getting ready to torch this boat !!!! (just kidding - I would get bored without it!)
