1980 Johnson Seahorse will not go in reverse

Thanks for looking. I have a 1980 70hp Seahorse. The reverse worked on day and then the next day it stopped, like most old stuff I guess. I tried to shift it into reverse and it just grinded the gears. Does anyone have a usefull suggestions. I am wondering it driving it to the lake cause the gear to slip out of place (ie bumpy road)? It goes forward no issues.

Disconnect the cable at the shift lever under the hood and shift as you spin the prop, easier with sparkplugs out.
See what happens.
