I have a 50hp Johnson, believe it is a 1980, not forsure though. It has no spark. Wondering if anyone knows how I could test things to find out what is wrong. Would like to get it to work. I really don't know anything about outboard motors, but I know regular mechanics, like cars and trucks. Hopefully someone can help me with this. Thanks.

In order to trouble shoot safely you need to get your self a manual. You may find one at the library. Most outboard ignitions are self generated and the ignition circuit is open to run and closed to stop.Trouble shooting improperly could damage the system.A simple way to test kill circuit is to unplug the harness at the motor crank with jumpers if she fires your kill circuit is defective. You may have to stop it with the choke.
