The flywheel shown in your photos is not the correct color for a 1980 Merc 35 HP. I'm not sure if the color is important, but it does indicate that the flywheel has been changed. I have repaired several of these 35 hp motors, including a 1989 which i am currently running on my boat and it has the orange colored flywheel, other years were more of a green/grey color. The other parts shown in your photos are definitely of 1980 vintage.

In my previous post to you on Feb 12, I included a lync and sync procedure. One of the first steps is to verify that the timimg pointer points to 0 degrees on the flywheel when the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC. This obviously is a very important starting point.

Have you done that??

When I acquire one of these Merc 35's. the first thing I do is I look over the powerhead carefully and observe what is not right for this motor and proceed accordingly.

BELIEVE THE EVIDENCE AND PROCEED! Your flywheel has been changed. Was it correctly re-installed ??

Good hunting,

John

This is a 40 not a 35. I dont know without going through the drawings if there is any difference. The flywheel core has been set to TDC on #1.
Looking at the drawings shows two distinct ignition set ups. This one has the set up that goes with #1 type not the toothed Flywheel of #2.

The stator/trigger/sw box are all new. The stator and switch box from the PO and are the type for the #1 set up. I don't know what they were doing. The #1 flywheel does not appear to have teeth for the starter motor. Any thoughts.

Your motor is rated at 40 HP because at that time Merc rated the HP at the crankshaft. Soon after the HP rating was changed 35 HP, but this time it was rated at the propeller shaft, which makes more sense. The cu. in. displacement for both engines is the same

So at that point Mercury got smart and followed the Japanese.

Mercury simply responded to a marketing ploy initiated by the Japanese.--------------------Many older Mercury motors will run like a charm for years after owners of offshore motors are faced with the " part no longer available " syndrome !

I have tried everything I can think of to get this beast going but still no good. Told the owner to get in touch with the PO to find out what he did. Got me beaten.
