1980 Merc 50 reverse lockout

Just got a motor (1980 Merc 50) that's been stored for 7 years and changed the impeller. After putting it back together the reverse lockout won't unlock (I knew it went together too easy!), It worked before.<br /><br />What did I miss?<br /><br />Thanks<br />Nikko

If it's not a a power trim engine the reverse lock cam is missing or not inslalled properly--Bob

the small step of properly positioning the reverse lockout cam. the pic is in the service manual. if not set correctly it wont work. some were plastic and wore out as well.

That was it guys, thanks!!<br /><br />Re & re'd the bottom end this morning and had a look. Sure enough, the cam was mis-clocked. I re-clocked it (after figuring out how it worked...no manual!!) and 15 minutes later it's together and works!<br /><br />thanks again!<br /><br />Nikki

thats why I did not attempt to type it. if you cant see the pic then you just have to look at the ramps and think a bit. good thing is it wont fit but 6 ways

Hey all:<br /><br />Wanted to say thanks for your help in lighitng off my "new" 1980 Merc 50. This engine (and boat) has sat since 1999 and while I got it out last weekend for a run, this weekend was it's first tour of duty for the family.<br /><br />It performed flawlessly!<br /><br />Unfortunately I believe I'll be putting stringers in the boat this year as it wallowed pretty good when it was up to speed...but it'll do just fine for the summer and it'll make a mess of kids happy.<br /><br />Price for the boat?
