I just purchased a 1980 Merc 50 hp tiller model which has an elcetric choke. This has a box with an ignition key in and a black button labled CHOKE on it. My question is, does this button open or close the choke? What do I do first when starting the engine cold and hot? Any help will greatly appreciated. I have no operating manuel to help me out,
Thanks,
FA

FA,

You can go to the Mercury website,https://appcenter.mercurymarine.com/litreq/ and you can order a operating manual. It's helpful to have.

On my Tracker I have a 75 outboard and I push the ignition key in while cranking and that chokes the carbs.

Lee

The button closes the choke. For a cold start, pump the bulb until firm, press the choke button and turn the key (assuming it is electric start).

Once the engine is warm, you should not need to use the choke to start the engine.
