1980 OMC 140HP I/O no Prop Rotation or Water pump.

1980 OMC 140 HP 3.0L I/O series 400 vertical model 981871.<br />Problem is motor runs and Can shift into gear but prop does not turn. Forward or Reverse <br />Also water pump pee hole has no water coming out.<br />Motor stopped on trailer turning prop by hand can feel shift into forward and reverse.<br />Does this indicate problem in upper gear case or lower gear case.<br />I belive it is a problem in upper gear case but want to be sure before I buy a $2000 doller part.<br />Upper Gear Case has had a slow leak for years but after taking in four times for repair and still the same I just keep changing oil.<br />It was a very slow leak but after about 4 trips out could start to see oil turning milky.<br />How hard is it to change upper gear case?? I have the Factory manual but looks pretty hard.

If the ball gears are turning, I would check the short shaft splines between the upper and lower gear case.

Clanton<br />Thanks for reply. Yes the Ball gears are turning. Is there any way to check short shaft splines with out pulling upper gear case???

clanton or anyone<br />Can I at least be sure lower gear case is not problem since water pump is not pumping and I belive it is in bottom of upper gear case??

The short shaft is what turns the waterpump and lower gears.
