My brother purchased a bayliner fishing boat with the Force 85 Motor. We started it for the first Time the other day by submerssing the lower unit in a tub of water.. With the engine running where does the cooling water exhaust from.. Should it spit water from the to exhaust holes on the back of the motor. It seemed to run just fine but I am worried about overheating it. Do the water pumps for cooling the motor break often and how much would it cost to replace if it is broke.

Where can I find an owners manual for this motor??

Thanks Chobes1

Your Force is fine. The two holes are simply a port off the main exaust to allow you to see the water comming out (telltail). The rest exits under the cav plate.
Consider the impeller a maintainance item,as you would lower unit lube, decarbon cleaning, ect.

The impeller should be changed out every two seasons whether it needs it or not. They are just rubber vanes on a hub,and wear quickly.
Esspecialy if you idle more than normal. But by your definition, I'd say your impeller is fine.
The impeller kit for your Force will run about 30buks, and cost about 200bukz to have installed.
As you can see, it pays to do it himself.
He must purchase a shop manual (expensive but pays for itself in less than a season).
If he is at all mechanicly inclined, has a good compliment of tools, he can do it.

I guess I forgot to mention that I do not see any water comming from the two exhaust holes on the back of the motor?? Dose this mean I need to replace the impeller.. If so is that a big job. I will have to replace it for my brother, he is not to mechanically inclined.
Thanks for quick respones yesterday..

Chobes118

chobes118,
When you submersed the lower unit, did you have it deep enough to submerge the captivation plate? The water pump is located above it. If not, the pump never got "primed" and you probably burned it up running it "dry". Replacing it is really very easy and should take about 30 minutes tops.
To replace it, first remove the cotter pin connecting the shift linkage. It's on the front side of the motor above the lower unit by the mounting plates. Look for it and you should see a small clip in the rod. Remove the clip. Next, remove the bolts holding the lower unit on. They are located under the captivation plate and there is also one hiding under the exhaust "fin". When you've got them all you will notice the crack between the lower unit and mid section widening. It it's not widening, then chances are you missed a bolt somewhere.
Once they are all out, the lower unit should slide out. The drive shaft will still be connected to the lower unit so you will need enough room to slide the whole assemble out.
Once out, you will see a rectangle type box wher the drive shaft enters the lower unit. This is the waterpump. Undo the screws and slide the cover off and you will see the impeller. This is what you need to replace.
It's important to note the direction of the "vanes". If you install the new one backwards, it wont work. Check the condition of the housing and make sure there is no rough spots, damage or clogged ports. If so, replace the housing too.

I'm not trying to be a substitute for the service manual, but I wanted to give you an idea of the process. You can pick up a basic clymer manual for your FORCE at most larger bookstores or someplace like amazon.com. It's around 30 bucks but it gives you a reasonably good instructions for amature mechanics.

Good Luck,
Nav.

Nav. You are GREAT!!! Tank you so much for your help!!! Just to let you know that pretty much the whole lower unit was submerged in the tub. So I would have to guess that the impeller is shot... I really appereciate all your help and 12Footers. Talk to you soon and will let you knoe the outcome...

Thanks again, Mike
