Hello guys!

Im right here in the heartland of Striper fishing USA. Once the houseboat building capitol of the world, Jamestown, Kentucky! To make things short, Im a younger guy, licensed through the Coast guard as an OUPV operator. Im on my 4th year as a river guide, and am trying to get a lake boat running. Ive found a deal on a 1980 22' Starcraft Supersport. Ive been watching it for 6 months now, and have to wait 1 more month(its on consignment) to get it for a low price of $2500.00. While alot of the other guys are using 20, 30, and 40 thousand dollar boats...i simply cannot afford one, do not need one, and honestly, that much money...would buy/build my dream cabin! Im a poor boy!5G75E35K93E73Le3Idc6iccd15843b2b81157.jpg5I55H45S43Ib3Je3p5c6i1294933c00701a50.jpg5Ia5G35W43E23Gb3I4c6ifff76caf592c180e.jpg5N25E95Kc3E53Kf3J3c6i58e41b592e2d1be6.jpg304_2087.jpg

It seems this will make a stable, and roomy vessel to outfit with down riggers, and cover with rod holders!

Tell me, am i getting a good deal? My best friend, and fishing mentor states the motor, "Runs like a singer sewing machine".
It has a 1500.00 trolling motor on it.

My Plans:
Sand, finish, repair, and multistage spray exterior
Disassemble interior
Redo the rotting wooden floors with Tred plate
New Transom
Etc.

My questions:
1.) I have looked up various methods of removing/repairing transom. To my understanding, I need Non-Pressure treated wood. What shall I coat the wood with, and how many coats. Also, as far as matching my ply wood for the transom, and epoxying goes, what kind of epoxy, how thick, and which method(clams, drywall screw). Im really lost here, so any and all info is appreciated
2.) Flooring. Has anyone ever used tredplating on the floor? I saw on here where one guy did. It looked great. In more detail, will i be able to rivit it in, the same as I would, plywood?

Thanks guys! Ill try to add a few pics!!

Welcome aboard!
22 foot SS's are much sought after boats.
That boat will give you a great fishing platform.
Transom is fairly easy, you will need 2 pcs of 3/4 inch wood glued and screwed together and sealed with multiple coats of spar or epoxy.
Tread plate to me seems expensive and too freaking hot to be barefoot on.

From one striper slayer to another, good luck.

These aluminum hulls are perfect for customization by the owner for a perfect dream boat...

I have to admit your enthusiasm and plans for a boat that's atleast isn't yours for another month is kinda funny. Like a kid in a candy store.. I know the feeling

That is nice bass! What pond you fishing in?? :)
And yes, Enthusiasm is very high. Heres the deal...I know the guy that owns the boat through a mutual friend. He has had it on consignment for sale at a local boat yard. There is about 1 month left on the consignment. The owner wants me to have it for 2500, because the guy consigning didn't sell it after it had sat for 6 months. The guy with the boat yard, automatically gets $500.00 if he sales it...so...lol

From one striper slayer to another, good luck.

You want to get a sheet of Aracu if you can find it, or birch of fir..you want no voids, or as little voids as possible.
There are a few thoughts on this..resin plus Fiberglas mat, just epoxy or just spar in multiple coats.
Some guys just use a Gorilla glue type glue and screw and clamp together, some use epoxy in between the 2 sheets..
The best advice I can give you is to use the "search forum" tool up at the main Starcraft section.
You can read how other guys have done it with pretty much step by step pics.

3/4 A/C or B/C plywood about $40.00 per sheet doubled for the transom. Do the deck in it also.. 1.5 gallon epoxy kit from Progressive Epoxy about $115.00 shipped to your door. Thin the epoxy about 15% with Xylene and apply two coats to all plywood paying extra attention to the end grain. If your careful with removing the deck and transom you have ready made patterns. Finish off by using 2 or 3" fiberglass tape epoxied over the deck seams. Then you can either paint your deck with a good acrylic porch and deck enamel or cover the deck with marine grade vinyl flooring.

That boat should make an excellent striper boat. Good luck with your project. Striper fishing is a passion shared by a lot of folks.

Welcome! Thant is a sweet hull, I hope you score it!

Well, since you have a full month before you can actually touch it, click the "Starcrarft Rebuilds" link in my signature and start reading. That's the biggest collection "How To Rebuild Alum Boats" on the planet.

Cheers:)

Good luck with the boat. I found that boat on the net and traded a few e-mails with the marina owner and he was not doing a very good job on selling the boat. I would be very surprised if he sells it. :)

In case you are interested, here is a thread I started seeking some advice on the boat:

Re: 1980 Starcraft SS 220 -Restoration-Striper Fishing Boat

Guys, I really do appreciate all of the feed back. If any of you are EVER in Central Kentucky/Tennessee please look me up. Im on the water over 200 days a year, and always love entertaining new folks.

As far as the boat goes, It is literally within a few miles of my house. I know the owner, and the boat. I do not think I would have any troubles with the engine, i just have a hard time trusting an engine that is that old...for too long anyways ;)

The deal is...I started out doing guided trips for trout a few years ago...long story short...I ended up in Alaska for a summer, and got bit by the "Big fish" bug during King season up there. I made it priority to dedicate the last few years of my life learning the art of chasing these big river striper. The season is VERY short..only last 2...3 months tops...so in order to maintain things while Im in my off season of trout, and river striper, i plan on working off of the lake next year. I have a choice....I can either finance a newer boat, and be stuck paying a big 300 a month+ payment...or...find something "older" that I can work on. Im currently enrolled at the community college...trying to get my certifications in Auto body. I really appreciate ALL of the feedback guys. Im just a POOR, and STRUGGLING FISHERMAN. A HUMBLE, YOUNG man trying to get ahead in this tough world HONESTLY. Im sure you older guys can relate to what is like, "getting started". While i would love to have a new SmokerCraft, Carolina Skiff, or one of those really cool northwest boats...I just cant budget one in. What I can afford however...is something I have 5...maybe 6k dollars in.

So Say i worst case scenario I do get it for 2500...
Stripping it.
Coat it for the hull.
Painting interior exposesed metal...
new wood..
etc.
I can surely keep it under 5k.

the only thing that does potentially fear me...is that...a colleague of mine just restored a classic Hewes Flats boat. 1 month after we flipped it and reassembled and painted...he through a rod through his 2004 Yamerhammer...

Edit: Also...is this old Mariner not the same as a merc? Thanks

Sorry for my poor grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Not slept good the last couple of minds. I have tin boats on my brain...and of course...first year of college...lots of stress :)

Nice fish shots man!!

Yah, I think you can keep it at the $5K mark to rebuild. If you are replacing the OB all bets are off though;)

Nice boat,, and nice fish pics! I hope you score on that boat,,, I think you'll enjoy making it your own. Would you mind if I PM'd you about striper advice? I've lived in Alaska 3 times and just moved down to NW Arkansas 5 years ago. I just picked up my 85 SS 16 a few weeks ago and am a few miles from Beaver Lake here. They pull some really nice stripers outta there and I would love to learn how to fish for 'em. Here's a pick of a couple small Kings when I was living in Haines, AK

Re: 1980 Starcraft SS 220 -Restoration-Striper Fishing Boat

on the motor....old 2 strokes can run for a very long time. it's not uncommon to find a 60s or 70s motor with good compression if it's low hours. go get a $25 compression gauge set at harbor fright and test compression. this will tell you a lot about internals of motor in 15 minutes.

nice fish, and welcome to the horde! and here's to your plans. you'll find a lot of folks here who understand that it's better to drop that 30Gs on a cabin than a depreciating boat. esp when your $5K boat won't give anything away to those new tinnies in terms of quality, durability or fishability.
