So far so good. Looks great. I would try to raise your temperatures up though if possible.

I don't know of ANY paint that would recommend applying their product when the substrate was below 50? F !!!! It's more than just the catalyst.

So, I hit a mile stone today with the boat. I finally got some paint on the bottom half!!

I started painting, not really 100% sure what I was going to do with it or the colors...

i didn't intend on cutting my head off... the paint prep can was a bit short.

heres completed with clearcoat from the front:

I originally wanted a bit lighter blue or "prettier" blue but the seat color selection sucks, and I wanted to coordinate somewhat with the ones I bought.

i stuck with just 3 colors, the main one on the bottom of the boat i created from scratch. I wanted one with as much large flake as possible, while achieving the shade of grey i desired.

Here's the shot from the rear:

And this is a closeup to show the flake a bit better ( but still not great) and the crisp tape lines. I used the best fine line tape 3M makes.

I realize these colors are not the "typical" boat colors, but that's what I like about a project. You get to make it unique and your own. When i get it in the sunlight tomorrow Ill take another picture because that's where the colors will really show their true potential....

Thanks buddy.

It feels like a huge accomplishment. After starting the project off with rebuilding those stringers, a part you'll never see and now finally putting a gloss on at least the bottom half feels great. This week the top half its going into surgery....

Wow ! The flake looks awesome ! Colors are very nice !
What type paint did you use ? I have a project coming up in about a year that I want to spray flake on .... I hope it turns out half as good as yours !

BYK, that IS an amazing paint job there. I like the color scheme myself. And yes the lines are extremely nice as well. Just can't beat those clear coat finishes. Are you looking to wet sand with 2000 or 3000 grit and polish or leave it like it is? Either way, you sure will get attention and turn heads for sure. Makes me want to get mine going all that much more now. Thanks for the amazing paint job and the kick in the pants to get me motivated again.

What type paint did you use and what gun tip to get the flakes to spray right? Most PPG automotive finishes that I have used are pearlescent types and that makes them look kind of metal flake, but true flakes are a lot harder to shoot. You did it very nicely! :thumb: :thumb:

Thanks Sphelps and GM!

At work I use PPG Envirobase, AKA Waterborne basecoat. Its a great system, been spraying it for 10 years.

I could have gotten some actual "flake" like you traditionally see in bass boats or amusement park rides from my rep, but it actually is so large it looks like dirt in the paint unless you bury it with 5 coats of clear. I didn't want to get into all that, so I created the color using the largest flake toner on the mixing bank, along with an additive to make the flake stand up more giving a larger appearance. The blue color is more of a pearl. Those colors look best in the sunlight, they are more of an effect rather than a sparkle.

Ill try to get some outside clearer pics today, hopefully it will be somewhat sunny out.

I may sand and polish the sides a bit, but the bottom is ok the way it is. Its a bass boat, so unfortunately it will eventually touch the odd rock while trolling for bass in coves and shallow areas.

BYK, thanks for the reply and recipe on what you used. I shoot PPG products as well, but I know you have many years of capability on me. And it shows. I hope when I shoot my little tri-hull boat (soon I hope) it looks half as good as your finish. :thumb:

Don't get mad, i know i'm in trouble for not posting in a while...

I have been working a lot at the boat. i even took two vacation days just to get some stuff done. Seems like still a lot to do, and February is almost over.

Well, i brought the top half of the boat in, to start stripping all the three paint jobs off of it. Its time consuming, since unlike a car you cant just sand or wire brush down to metal, with fiberglass you almost need to hand sand a lot of it off so you don't create even more work for yourself by digging down into fiberglass/gelcoat too much.

20160201_182311.jpg

At this point i had the bulk of the boat sanded down, as much as i could with a sander.

Its funny, When i started this project i thought It'd be a good idea to track my hours.... I lost track back while doing the stringers.... But part of me doesnt WANT to know how many hours I have into this thing. Literally hundreds.

Now for the fun part! Customizing the boat to the way I want it!!!!

I knew the plywood on the back of the gauges was rotten,

20160207_114052.jpg

So after cutting that out, I decided i wasn't crazy about the square console and windshield. So I went to my ATV dealer (also part of where i work) and asked them to price me a round windshield. They had two of the same windshield hanging on the wall no one knows how long, $10 each so i bought them both!

And I started cuttiing...

20160208_140346.jpg

There was a lot of test fitting and head scratching up to this point, but how i came up with it would be a whole other topic I think.

20160208_100334.jpg

20160208_122118.jpg

This is the windshield i bought, carefully test fitting it.

Before I went to far with this, i really wanted more storage in the boat. there was basically a vacant space between the console and the front fishing deck.
FYI, I built the framework of the customization always with the top half of the boat laid down on the bottom half, so it will all fit after it was completed.

20160220_130906.jpg

This looks like a lot of fill, but really all the gaps are PB'd and glassed, with a coat no thicker than a gelcoat would be of filler.

And last night i got the sucker primed!!! a milestone for sure.

Hope to sand it this weekend as well as evenings this week. If at all possible, and paint it next weekend!!!!

Okay NOW I can see the pictures. And I have to say, you do great work. I do like what you accomplished and the new console setup. It looks factory the way you managed to blend them together nicely. I get the feeling you've done this type work before. :thumb:

Thanks GM!

I finally got it all sanded today, I have to re prime a few spots and then it'll be ready for paint next weekend.

Maybe this week ill tackle the rollers I bought to replace the carpet bunks, and source out some replacement hoses for the fuel tank and live well etc. a lot of that stuff will be much easier to clamp on before putting the two halfs together for the final time.

I got the top half painted this weekend, and I like how it turned out. it was probably the most difficult thing Ive ever sprayed in 20 years painting, just because you had to hang in over the side to get in some tight areas without touching the boat accidently with your arm, hose, elbow LOL! Theres a few spots ill polish a bit of dust out of, but for the most part it stayed fairly clean despite all the crevices that I was dealing with.

Here it is sealed, and the sparkly silver on the edges

20160305_083530.jpg

And then masked that off, and painted the blue pearl

20160305_102509.jpg

Here it is all baseoated with the dark grey metallic strip between the blue and silver. If you look closely you can see I faded the darker grey out toward the end

And here she is cleared
