1980's Mariner with obsolete lower unit part

Well it was that time of year yesterday, and I pulled our pontoon. When I drained the lower unit gear oil, I unfortunately had water in it. This boat/motor were new to me last year and at the end of the season I had some work done by a local shop and they supposedly drained and refilled the gear oil. They did not say anything about water in it (I'm sure they would have because I would have had them investigate). I now wonder if they changed out the screws/plugs and did not get the right ones, causing my leak.

This is a 40 hp Mariner 40EL 6E9 L 423576. I plan to pressure test the lower unit, but before doing so, I would like to make sure I have the right drain/fill plugs and corresponding washers.

The bottom plug and washer are readily available, but the top is NLA. Those part numbers are 83392M and 95610M. Any thoughts on what to do regarding these obsolete parts?

Any pictures of these plugs ?--------These items are fairly standard and readily available I think.----Any damage to threads on plugs and holes in the housing ?

That is a Yamaha built motor probably uses Yamaha plugs which will be metric.

Well I pressure tested the lower unit and it would not hold 10 psi. Filled it up with gear oil and it leaked out the water intake pickups and out the prop hub. To the shop it goes......

E-bay for old parts.
get a used lower unit
get a price to fix the lower unit, it may be better to get another used outboard, 2 or 4 stroke.

Plugs were not the problem. Pressure tested it in my daughters kiddie pool and it bubbled from the impeller housing. At the shop getting a seal kit and new prop hub which had spun. Thanks for the input guys.

Thanks for telling us the problem.
Just curios, did you hit anything to spin the prop, or damage the seals?
How much did the shop charge, you don't have answer.

I never hit anything but this is my second year of ownership and I have no idea what happened in the other 29 years. I?ll let you guys know the cost when its done.
