my brother inlaw gave me this motor he used it on a zodiac he said it was getting to hard to start so he bought a newer motor first thing i noticed when i put it on the stand and tried to start the motor was it was hard pulling over even with the plugs out so i thought maybe something was tight in the bottom end and so on. i kept working it and finally i got it running water was pumping fine motor ran like a top except there is something missing from the tiller handle to the armature plate because when you let go off the throttle it comes back to far and stalls so i looked it up in the parts section and found out what was missing but back to the main problem with the motor running and me holding the throttle and idle it runs great if i back the throttle of just a little bit almost to stall something really vibrates it all most sounds like a tinging sound so i shut the motor down and started to look for the problem i noticed the armature plate has a lot of play so i took the fly wheel off and noticed the magnets are all scratched up the stator it self is rubbing against the fly wheel that is why the motor is hard pulling over even with the plugs out could someone tell me if i changed the armature plate bearing if that would help my problem thanks

You will need to remove the flywheel/stator plate and inspect the bearing (I think you are referring to the plastic disc) to see if it is broken.

yes i am talking about the plastic disk i already have it off i does not look broken but could it be worn plus i also noticed there is a red plastic arm that comes from the linkage from the tiller arm that right now does not go to anything could that maybe go to the armature plate and help it from moving so freely thanks i think i might have to find a manual

The red plastic arm is a starter lockout, wouldn't cause your issue- maybe the disc is work out. Is this an electric start motor?

yes it is a electric start motor the starter is missing but it has a spot for the starter plus it has the battery cables still attached with the postive cable taped up thanks

All the screws in tact for the stator and sensor as well as the screws that hold the stator plate to the retainer? The stator plates from those motor are pretty bulletproof and really wear out, the 74-76 motors had issues but I've yet to see 77+ have slop.

If it was trolled allot, the alternator coil gets pulled on really hard by the flywheel magnets at low speeds and makes the mag plate wear and get loose. Some guys remove the alternator charge coil to deal with this, might as well since your electric starter is gone.
