Re: 1981 18ft starcraft supersport

Just curious. How would a super lam work on a transit?

Last night I cut the other half of the transom and here it is in place for a dry fit.

Looks like I need to trim the top a little bit so that it lines up with the top of the transom skin

Fit looks good!

Are you using the epoxy resin? How many coats do you plan on applying?

I like to sand with 120 grit between coats, not a lot... but just enough to dull the finish and give the next coat something to grip to, wipe clean with a damp cloth and let dry before next coat.

Last night I put resin on each side and twice in all edges. I am using fiberglass resin. For the first coat I used just over half the amount of hardener recommended so that it would have time to soak in. I might do one more coat all the way around or maybe just the edges before I fiberglass it.

Ok, waych your dimensions and don't build it up too thick if you're going to glass it. If it's a tight fit already you may have problems getting the wood back down in the pocket after you glass it.

No need, just as that 1st coat of resin starts to become tacky, roll on a 2nd layer of resin, lay on the cloth, and fully wet it out.

Too much resin can be just as bad as too little. When it's applied too thick (resin rich) becomes brittle & w/out the glass it has little to no value. Under catalized is also not ideal, when you say 1/2 the recommended amount, did you still use at least 1% MEKP? Using metric makes it much easier to accurately catalyze your resin mixes...........

This ^^^ is for polyester resin

Most tin builder's prefer the epoxy to polyester. Jig is a huge fan of epoxy :D

And he's right about making the new transom lamination too thick to go back thru the gap in the gunwale, and fit in that angle 'shelf' at the bottom...........

I have a 1/16" to play with to make up my 1.5" width.

I need to have the transom cap fabricated unless any of you know where I can find on.

next project after this transom goes back in is the side panels. I plan on carpeting them to match the floor. And then we are back on the water till Fall "knock on wood".

Re: 1981 18ft starcraft supersport

Can any one tell me if indeed the foam that is in the back of the boat on the sides under the splash well? If I can keep it out of the boat then it would give me more space back by the gas tank.

If that foam is factory installed, you need to keep it or an equal amount similarly located. OB is heavy, so to keep it above water, stern needs more foam then the bow.

Unless you filled below decks w/ foam. Then you might be able to delete the stern foam.
