1981 9.9; Cannot get lower unit off

trying to change my waterpump and cannot get lower unit down. does the shaft on this motor have ot be released above or below? and how?

unbolted the lower unit below the LS spacer, it dropped about an inch and stopped.

Put a couple of bolts back in and unbolt it above the LS spacer. The shift-linkage is up there. You'll see a bronze coupler once you split it apart a bit. Remove one screw and the shift-shaft will separate. Then, the whole LU will drop out.

After it drops out, remove the LS spacer and replace the water pump
