I just bought my first boat and have a couple of rookie questions. What fuel mix should I use and do I leave the cap vented on my fuel tank when running the engine? Any help would be appreciated because I want to try it out for the first time today. Thank ahead!

Re: 1981 9.9 Evinrude fuel

Hi, Julie.

Your fuel should be fresh, 87 octane unleaded and alcohol free gasoline and TC-W3 rated outboard oil. 6 Gallons gas, 1 pint oil. That is called 50:1, even though it really calculates to 48:1.

The vent on the tank cap must be open when operating the engine.

To start: Pump the primer bulb in the fuel line until it turns firm. Choke on, pull. If she tries to start or starts reduce choke to half. Run at half choke until she starts to "burble" and smoke. Then choke off and Bon Voyage!! :)
