1981 9.9 Johnson stalls out at high rpm

I have a 9.9 johnson long shaft outboard (1981) that starts fine but idles rough and when I speed up the motor it wants to stall. I have to keep playing with the choke (pulling it in and out) to keep it running. This motor has fresh fuel, water is flowing fine, and starts fine. Any ideas. Thank You in advance.

I would give the carb. a thorough cleaning and a new kit. Sure sounds like your jets are clogged with something. While your at it, it is advised to replace your fuel lines from the tank to the carb. as ethanol blend fuel is reported to be deteriorating the rubber. Make sure the new hoses are approved for ethanol. Check out the Top Secret File at the top of this forum to see how to clean the carb. and put the needle back to a start setting. Best of luck.
