was on the lake this weekend and went to start the motor when all i heard was a loud grinding noise and the motor did not turn over very well.lifted the hood cover and discovered the gear that is on the top of the starter was ground up pretty good and would not grab the flywheel well enough to start the motor.the starter and bendix work fine.can i easily just replace the worn out top gear?do i have to take the starter off for such a repair?and lastly what is the little gear called?

on the bright side of things i took off the shoe laces for my work boots and discovered i still have what it takes to pull start a small v-4 :)

you learned why the pack the pull ropes under the cowl, that everyone discards. a shoe lace??? it's call the bendix. you have to remove the starter, but it's not a bad job, if you know the difference between a wrench and screwdriver. you can go to the link and look up your motor and get the part #. replace the assembly, there a reason it got chewed up. good luck. http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Accessories/Literature/
