Re: 1981 Evinrude 25hp Project Motor

Hi all, I took the carb off.
Also, I see some oil by the plugs, is that bad?IMG-20120812-00211.jpg
Also, in the carb the jet that is in the pic I am guessing that is the high speed jet? I cannot move it. Is it supposed to move? I also noticed that the tube inside is off center. Is this OK?IMG-20120812-00212.jpg
What about the little 'ring' above it with the slot in it, can I remove that?
I also noticed that the carb has 2 screws missing from the left side of it, so it wasnt even being held together properly, thats probably why I saw the gas leaking.
What am I supposed to clean here?

Check the pics, and let me know.
Thanks! Almost there!

The oil around the plugs is no biggie. I seen the same on my motors. Just torque the plugs in a bit more.

That's the pickup tube. It sits off center. Don't remove. Just spray carb cleaner through it and compressed air.

The high speed jet sits in the bottom of the carb bowl. I would just spray carb cleaner through it and compressed air.

I forgot to mention to also remove the frost plug on top and clean the small passages of the idle circuit.

Re: 1981 Evinrude 25hp Project Motor

ok, what does that look like?

It's the parts labeled 4 and 5 in this diagram:

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...ECIM&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=Carburetor

There should be new ones in your rebuild kit. To remove the old ones, you'll need to drill a small hole through them - VERY CAREFULLY - you don't want to drill into the body of the carb - and then use a nail or a pick to pull them out. Clean the little fuel passages that are underneath, and then replace with a new plug - use a large punch or the head of a bolt or something to tap them into place.

For the careful drilling part, I like to use one of these:

A drill press with a depth stop would be a good option too.

Re: 1981 Evinrude 25hp Project Motor

OK, so I got it all rebuilt and cleaned up. Put new screws in it, and ran it in the bucket in forward medium throttle for like 20 mins.
I still have to turn the slow idle screw on the side up a bit. The motor runs nicely now. The rich/lean knob is well seated now and does not spin out. I am going to take it out this weekend and see how we do.
I also took the screws out on the left side of the powerhead, cleaned the rust off and sprayed some oil/lube on them, and also sprayed it into the holes. So I am not sure what I lubed, but it seems ok. I will let you know how she runs this weekend.
Thanks again.

Re: 1981 Evinrude 25hp Project Motor

OK, so had her out on the Hackensack river today here in NJ. It was a nice day for a water test, tide was going out, wind was calm..perfect.
I ran it for a bit close to the launch, running fine, had lots of power etc. Ran for about a 20 mins no problems.
WOT was fine, then as I come back to the launch and low throttle, it just dies. Then it would not start back up.
Let it sit, nothing, just spinning, nothing firing. Then I took it home, put it in the bucket, tried to start it, nothing, just a spinning starter and flywheel, not turning over. What else could this be?Again, I really want to get this one running great, so I am willing to break it down again and see whats up. If the motor just spins but does not 'connect' to anything, what should I be looking at? It was running strong today while on the water. It seems when I power down its got problems, when I start it, it runs fine low idle...Wondering where to look next?

I need clarification, you said "just a spinning starter and flywheel, not turning over". Do you mean that the starter was turning the flywheel and it would not fire off? Have you checked for spark?

Bummer. I agree with Daviet. If not firing, check for spark. Also, your kill switch could be faulty. Temporarily disconnect the kill switch and see if it starts.

Re: 1981 Evinrude 25hp Project Motor

Yes, Daviet, the starter was turning the flywheel, but did not want to turn over. OK, I am going to check for spark, I guess that means pulling the wire off the plug and seeing if I get shocked? I will also cut the kill switch wires and see if that helps.
Thanks guys...almost there! I am sticking with this motor. It pushes the boat really nice, so I really want to see it work out with this one.

A spark tester would be less painful and more accurate, LOL. And only about $7 at your local auto part store. The spark should jump 7/16" air gap.

Re: 1981 Evinrude 25hp Project Motor

OK, so I tried starting it today, I put new plugs just for the hell of it, and no spark. My bro felt electricity in the wire, but no spark on the plug. I realize now that this may have been caused when I slowed down the the water behind me came into the motor. I was not running it with the cover on at the time because I wanted to keep an eye on the motor just to make sure the carb did not spring a gas leak.
So maybe the water washing into the back of the motor burned one or both of the little black boxes to the right of the plug?
It was running fine before this happened, then about 20 mins after it happened the motor died, and I cant get it to start at all. No spark at all. hmmm...

Re: 1981 Evinrude 25hp Project Motor

I think you are talking about the coils, water washing over them will not cause a loss of spark, they are supposed to be weather proof.
You might want to go to the CDI website and look up your engine, use their trouble shooting guide to check out your ignition system.
