When I move the shift lever to the "neutral" or "reverse" positions, the prop usually just keeps moving forward, though not as fast as in the "forward" position. Sometimes it actually shifts gears as desired, but usually not.

Any ideas? If so, what can I do to repair?

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forum. My guess from here would be that your clutch dog is worn and not shifting the gears properly. This is usually the case in older motors.

Hi Loui,
Rather than scold you, which others here seem to do rather than help,
Can I ask if it's the Morris, or OMC control box? If it is OMC, BRP has a breakdown of it on their site.

Re: 1981 Evinrude 9.9 won't shift gears

this is the same info as the BRP( Bombardier recreational products)

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/OMC/OBAccessories/parts.html

pick your year and you will be offered several types of accessories to view...pick the one you have....

and open it...

it isnt a trouble shooting guide,....but the exploded diagrams of the parts help visualize what COULD be wrong

good luck
