1981 johnson 115 hp overheating

Hello again,

I posted a few weeks back about my motor over heating. You guys directed me to the thermostat, and that seems to be the issue. I took the thermostats out and ran the motor without them, and the overheat alarm did not go off. My question is, Can I run this motor with no thermostats at all? I was told that all they do is keep the engine running at the optipmal temperature, somewhere around 160 degrees. If I ran the motor without out them, it would just run a tad cooler. Is there any other downside to doing this? Thanks, Nick

The down side to running cool is that the motor then tends to coke or carbon up since it does not reach the most efficient operating temperature. This can cause the motor to run rough, rings to stick or break, scored pistons and cylinder walls, or even a runn on condition where the motor simply diesels and will not stop running until all fuel is exhausted. The short answer is to replace your thermastats. You do need them.

Thanks, there is a set on ebay with gaskets and everything for 24 bux, I will probably just buy those.

One other point I thought of though. Dont a lot of motors not have thermostats at all? Any are the things you listed likely to happen?
