1981 mercruiser lower unit

Hey everyone well i have searched all over the internet and i cannot find an answer to my problem so I hope someone here has some help Today i took my lower unit off so i could change the impeller i got that done no problem I rotated my prop counterclock wise and the shifter shat clockwise so that the splined shaft would turn now i have tried to install lower unit and while doing so I turn the prop counter clock wise so the shaft turns but i cannot get the lower unit all the way up so i am not sure what the problem might be it just seems like the splines on the shaft won't go into the gear in the upper housing I would so very much appreciate any and all help

I replaced my impeller this year. Check out this link and it may help you find your problem. I have a 1984 470.

I feel your pain i just replaced the impeller on my 1980 mercruiser outdrive took me between 5 and 10 trys to get it right try putting the shifter in forward there is a sleave on the shifter and i think that gets hung up during instalation make sure that it is lined up as you rais the lower unit, and good luck just keep trying you'll get it

Hey thanks guys but i have tried all that the shifter and all is lining up just feels like the splines aren't but i will keep trying

Turn the prop CCW a little, it will turn the vertical shaft until the splines will line up.

Hey Don i have been doing that seems like it is binding up when turning and trying to get the splines lined up

I had to get my neighbor to help me with mine. It is a lot of things to keep track of with only two hands. Drag a friend over to help and review the install manual again. You might find something you missed. Good Luck.
