1981 vs 1985 Johnson 25hp motor

I was just told today by a boat shop that my 1981 25hp was a 1985. He said because of some number on the engine. It is an electric start. I just bought the boat last week and didn't notice a pull cord, is there one on the motor somewhere, also does this type of motor have a charging system for the battery. First boat guys ok. Please help THANKS

A 1985 would be a model number J25ECOC or some variation thereof. The "CO" part says the year. A 1981 would be "CI" 1982 is "CN"

There is no manual starter on a factory equipped electric start. There is a notch on the flywheel for emergency starting with a rope. Yes it has a small alternator for charging the battery, but not for running all the electricals on an aircraft carrier.

FYI. The model number is located on a tag on the side of the transom clamps. This how you determine the model and year of your motor. Let us know what it is and we can confirm it for you.

Yes it has a small alternator for charging the battery, but not for running all the electricals on an aircraft carrier.

I have the title for the motor and it says 1981 Johnson 25hp, but the transom mount has the model number J25TEC0S which is a 1985. What gives? Thanks!

typo at title office. does it have the right model # and serial # on the title?

I will check, the boat is a 1981 14' monarch and the motor says the same year. It could of been a transfer error from the previous owner. I have to look into it. Thanks. Anybody have an idea where I can find a Tiller handle assembly for a 1981/1985 Johnson 25hp motor, mine is loose as mention earlier.
