My husband and I would like some recommendations before we proceed to purchasing this boat. This is a step up for us. We currently have a 14 foot with 5HP for use in the bay (crabbing and fishing). Want to get our family out on the water with us. Would anyone know more about this type boat and if this is worth purchasing. Asking price is about $5000.

So far I have only heard good things about the V-20. Wellcraft definitely make solid and strong boats. I think the engine is worth more than $5000 by itself. If the boat is not rotten or waterlogged it should be worthwhile. But I do think you could do better for the money. $5000 should get you in a late 90's 20 foot runabout I would think, particularly with the way gas prices are going. I think there will be a glut of boats on the market this spring, and that only means low prices for buyers. I would look around a little more. By the way, where on the Bay do you boat? I go out of the Bohemia on the upper bay.

The V-20 is a great boat, I have a '78 cuddy with a Mercruiser 898 I/O. The price seems reasonable if it is solid. Areas of concern are if the transom is solid and soft spots in the floor. To test the transom tilt the engine up, step on the lower unit and also pull up on the engine and see if there is any deflection or deformation of the transom. If there is, walk away unless you feel like doing major surgery or putting some $$ into it. There is a large cover over the fuel tank right in the middle of the deck. This is notorious for getting soft. It is not the end of the world, and if you are handy with fiberglass, you can fix it. But you can use this to get the price down.
