I have a 1982 Evinrude 90 with newer controls, post 1996 I think. I recently replaced the water pump because it would overheat and steam would come out of the telltale. Now, the alarm goes off while it is on the rabbit ears. I have not run it in the water. I can see no indication that it is running hot.

What would cause the alarm to go off after running it for about 10 minutes?

Thanks in advance.

it's either running hot, or the sensor is bad. check your compression especially after running hot. could have a blown head or exhaust gasket.

What alarm is sounding? Constant beep? Intermittent?

If you are positive you are not overheating, I would test the sensor as Tash said as per your manual. Follow that with the compression test.

Also remember, the muffs are "force feeding" the cooling system, so you cannot test the water pump while running this way. Can you easily hold your hand on the head for 4 to 5 seconds when warm? Do you have an infrared thermometer to verify the actual temp?

Unless the motor has been upgraded to a VRO or OMS system, it would not have other than an overheat alarm.

You should be able to keep your hand on either cylinder bank for at least 3 seconds without feeling burned. If not, you are still overheating. There is a good possibility that your water deflectors have moved. That is not difficult to repair.

The fact that he mentioned the control being upgraded made me mention that, as was unsure of what else had been modified.

Ran it again and the starboard bank is definitely hotter than the port. I could touch the port side for several seconds but couldn't touch the starboard for more than a couple of seconds.

I have a compression tester. Should I still do a hot compression test or can the problem be isolated yet?

Thanks again.
