1982 200HP versus 1985 185HP

I have a '82 Evinrude 200HP with 2 seized cylinders.

I purchased a used '85 Johnson 185HP with melted and damaged wiring.

Both engines became damaged when the thermostats stuck closed. Only the '82 has seized cylinders.

My question is:

Can I move the entire electrical system from the '82 to the '85, or do you recommend I purchase new components for the '85 to make it run?

The parts are interchangeable. Youre good to go. Make sure you find the reason the pistons seized. Its kind of unlikely both thermostats stuck shut at exactly the same time. Anyway, at speed the pressure relief valves will allow water even if the t-stats are closed.

Good luck!

Thank you for your reply! This forum is a great place for people to help each other. I really appriciate everyone here.

The '82 powerhead was running very well at 3/4 open throttle when the motor died. I used to work for Mercury Marine's test facility in Florida, and had heard the 'seize noise' many times.

After getting towed in, a compression test showed 0 psi for #2. Cyclinder #5 was already a low compression cylinder (80psi) when I purchased the boat.

The wire for the high alarm siren was damaged, and I didn't know it. We found the thermostate melted on the starboard head and assumed the thermostat was the problem.

I had replaced the water pump the week before, and we are sure that water was pumping fine at the time of failure.

Do you believe that there could be some kind of blockage in the water chambers of the block?

I ask because I plan to fix the '85 powerhead. Even though none of the cylinder show any damage, both thermostates are melted and much of the wiring is ruined, possibly by a small heat fire?

Anyhow, money is tight and I was hoping to transfer the electrical systems and only have to buy two thermostat kits and some gaskets.

But your comments lead me to believe that maybe the carb for #2 is fouled up leading to a lean condition.

I'm not sure here, but thanks for any comments or suggestions!

When you say the thermostat was melted, do you mean the plastic part of the pressure relief valve?

As for the new pump, what brand was it?

On the '82 powerhead, #2 cylinder seized. We found the starboard side white platic part melted completely. The port side was fine.

Both white plastic parts are melted on the '85 powerhead, but none of the cylinders appears damaged.

That is why I was hoping to transfer the electrical from the '82 to the '85.

The parts for the water pump rebuild on the '82 outboard came in a Sierra kit.

Thank you for all our help!

I would strongly suggest a water pump kit from Evinrude/Johnson over the Sierra kit.

OK

Here is my plan for the rebuild:

1) Move electrical system from '82 to the '85

2) Purchase a new gasket kit for the powerhead

3) Rebuild the carbs

4) Replace water pump with OEM kit

5) Install new thermostats and bypass valves

Can you think of anything else?

Thanks!
