Re: 1982 200HP versus 1985 185HP
Thank you for your reply! This forum is a great place for people to help each other. I really appriciate everyone here.

The '82 powerhead was running very well at 3/4 open throttle when the motor died. I used to work for Mercury Marine's test facility in Florida, and had heard the 'seize noise' many times.

After getting towed in, a compression test showed 0 psi for #2. Cyclinder #5 was already a low compression cylinder (80psi) when I purchased the boat.

The wire for the high alarm siren was damaged, and I didn't know it. We found the thermostate melted on the starboard head and assumed the thermostat was the problem.

I had replaced the water pump the week before, and we are sure that water was pumping fine at the time of failure.

Do you believe that there could be some kind of blockage in the water chambers of the block?

I ask because I plan to fix the '85 powerhead. Even though none of the cylinder show any damage, both thermostates are melted and much of the wiring is ruined, possibly by a small heat fire?

Anyhow, money is tight and I was hoping to transfer the electrical systems and only have to buy two thermostat kits and some gaskets.

But your comments lead me to believe that maybe the carb for #2 is fouled up leading to a lean condition.

I'm not sure here, but thanks for any comments or suggestions!
