I just purchased a 1980s Sea Ray with a 70 hp Johnson. The boat had been sitting around for a couple of years, so I had a local shop check it over and they were able to repair it. My question is how do the side mounted controls work. How do I start it and run it?

There are several kinds but the one I am familiar with has the throttle and beside that is a lever that you can flip up.

Make sure the shift/throttle is in nuetral, raise the flat lever about half way, push in and hold the the key then turn it to start.

The choke is operated by pushing in the key and is a momentary on so it is only choking if you are pushing the key.

The flat lever controls timing advance so it will make the engine run really fast, you wnat to back it down when the engines starts to a fast idle and you may need to just bump the key to keep it runnign for the forst minute after that lower the timing advance all the way and you are off.
