The pawl and spring is available (about $20, I think) -- blocks manual start in gear above fast idle. (Electric start models have a neutral safety switch in the starting circuit.) Sorry I missed your separate post -- think i would replace it, if mine.
Back on operational issues -- Unless you know for sure it shut down due to fuel starvation of some kind, I would do the usual battery of tests: compression and spark, rule out overheating, and consider testing for cyl drop. Fuel and carb kits are available, of course, and sounds like you are doing the carb -- think you might end up doing both carb and fuel pump. Both are maintenance issues. Did you replace the water pump impeller on your motor yet?
