Years later when Mercury started making Force engines which are the exact same block, they changed to L76V Which was always a Mercury plug.

So, the choice is yours L20V was the Chrysler plug but L76V won't hurt the engine.

Is there an alternative that doesn't use surface gap plugs?

NO! Some people recommend a bent electrode plug for a better idle but if you use a bent electrode plug you are running the risk of melting holes on the pistons.

You can use NGK BUHX if you don't like Champions and Autolite also makes an equivalent but I forget the number. Incidentally, Champion changed the numbers on L20V It is now called something like a 322 I haven't bought one in years so don't call that number gospel.
