1982 Cobia

It?s a 1982 Cobia with a 120 merc just had gimbal replaced. This was the first time back out on the water. Problem originated going across the water, the boat stopped suddenly with a grinding noise After starting the boat in the yard The propeller turns and I can still hear the noise coming from the out drive. Can anyone tell me the first thing to check?

Ayuh,...

Drain the outdrive,+ Look for Metal in the Oil...

Gear went. Maybe more than one gear.

hmmm...just had gimbal bearing replaced? I would take a good look at bellows and see if BOTH ends are overlapping the pieces they are mounted to by half inch at least....and clamps are very tight....these were of course removed to pull outdrive for bearing replacement....actually i would pull outdrive and reach in to bearing with fingers and rotate may have been installed inside out....if you see a dimple/hole on bearing it is backwards and if any water present take it back...
