I have a 1982, or 84 Evinrude 140. Title says 1984, but the model number reveals it as 1982. The motor is on a 19' 1994 Godfrey Marine Hurricane deck boat. The boat has been stripped of all seats and is not a center console with 2 fishing seats in the front. This boat had a Johnson 140 on it, but I had to replace and rig this one. I have taken this out 2 times since rigging. I never took out with the Johnson.

Now that all being said here seems to be what I perceive to be a problem. I have no idea about how to use the trim. I have never had a boat that hat power tilt/trim. I am not sure where to start and what to do. What I do is start out all the way down and when I get going I trim up just a bit. It is always a task and I can never tell what I need to do. Well last night I went out night fishing with 2 friends. One went out with me from the start and the other we picked up later that night. While I had the first guy with me we got on plane, but it took a a bit of tinkering with the trim. When we picked up the other fella I seemed to have a real problem. The last guy sat in the front fishing seat. I couldnt get on plane no matter what. I tried everything. The motor ran fine. I had the throttle all the way down at wot. I know just three people wont bog this motor or boat down. My Jon boat and 35hp johnson will take three people an plane. What troubled me even more was that when I would slow down. When I slowed from any speed over slow to idle the bow would go under water . That is scary at 2am. I have drain ports on the boat so I would speed up to scoot water to drains. I just dont understand the plane issue at all. The third fella was a large person. 6'8" and around the 420 mark I would guess. But I shouldnt be having this problem. he boat has no extra seating, or anything like that. Just a captain chair and two front fishing seats. I move all of us to the middle back and tried and still nothing.

If you have any other structural questions shoot them to me. I really need this resolved. I just do not know where to start. Could it be throttle? I had it at WOT. I cant tell RPM because the PO did some wiring and I noticed that when I crank and sit at idle I am at 8000, then when I run I drop so I am assuming it is backwards. Has a speed-odometer but the hose is cut and the piece that goes on the transom isnt there. it is a work in progress for me.

Thanks in advance!

Tach should have a dial on its back and should be set to #6.

What is the model number of the engine?

What is the compression psi reading of each cylinder?

With the spark plugs removed, the spark should jump a 7/16" gap on all cylinders with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP! Does it?

Note that the 7/16" gap is important... checking spark with the s/plugs is a waste of time.

The boat I have now I got because the previous owner didn't know how to use the trim and couldn't be boat to quit "plowing" through the water and plane on top.

The only problem was he would tilt the motor down to the trim cylinders and then quit. He wouldn't hold the trim switch until the trim cylinders would completely retract.

First time out we trimmed it and were on top of the water

On mine it goes down really quick in the tilt mode then hits the trim cylinders and it will slowly creep the rest of the way down. It works the same way coming back back up.

What is the compression psi reading of each cylinder? 1(120) 2(120) 3(118) 4( 118)

With the spark plugs removed, the spark should jump a 7/16" gap on all cylinders with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP! Does it? I will check that. I did have an issue with plug wires hitting the cover and pulling off. I could hear the spark when this happened and stopped to fix. I will check the spark today and report back. That wouldnt make the bow dip under when stopping. There was no chop. Smooth water at night.

Note that the 7/16" gap is important... checking spark with the s/plugs is a waste of time.

Thanks for the information I will check tonight!

Mine does the same exact thing. Fast on tilt and slow on trim. I had it trimmed all the way down at start. I watched it to make sure it was. I then started off. It never planes, and I try every trim combo I can just to get it to go faster. I throttle all the way down and I can hear the rpms go up, and it sounds like it is spinning way to fast for the speed we are moving.
I looked at it today and noticed that on the bottom of the motor where the prop is that plate was missing. The one that looks like a fin hanging down above the prop. I think it is called a trim plate or something. I added that today and a whales tale. Gonna take it out and see what it is doing now. Thanks!

I took the boat out again today and it did just fine. Could have been the big fell. I had myself and another guy my size, my wife, and kids and hit 30 (gps) . I do have a question though. What is the trim tab under the anti cavitation used for? I assume it is for steering help. Will it help offset a lean as well? Like if I have more weight on one side vs the other. Will it correct the lean under power?

Trim tab pertains to steering. If rig pulls to right, move trim tab to right slightly.
