1982 evinrude 50hpwill not shut off

We have an evinrude that will not shut off at the key switch unless you choke it. We have changed the kill switch wire from the ignition to the power pack. Changed the ignition switch, then changed the power pack. After changing all of this it still will not shut off at the switch. Now the boat it self does not have a lanyard or a neutral safety switch. We have ordered a neutrual safety switch but it is not hooked up yet.<br /> So what would be causing this problem help much appreciated.<br /><br /> THANK YOU!<br /> Nick

Hey Nickster,<br />Do a continuty check on the black/yellow wire from the switch to the plug-in at the power pack. If there isn't any continuity that's the problem.<br />Good Luck

That black and yellow is the kills switch wire that we have already replaced is there any other ideas why this motor wont shut off. <br /><br /> Thank you <br /> Nick

Here is the scoop on this motor. We had a 1982 50 Evinrude mounted and running on another boat. We switched the motor to another boat also rigged for OMC but had an older motor. We replaced the control box and cables but left everything, as far as ignition switch and harness, alone.<br /> The motor now starts and runs fine but will not shut off with the keyswitch. Replaced keyswitch and retried. No change. Tested black/yellow wire for continuity and found no open shorts but it did have excessive resistance. Replaced black/yellow wire from keyswitch directly to powerpack. Tested again, still no change. <br /> Right now I am going to try another harness altogether. Also have a powerpack on order just to throw at it but I assume it won't fix the problem. I must be cursed!<br /> Any help with this enigma would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check the connections inside the harness side of the power pack leads? I had same thing happen and it turned out the connector pin had broken but was still held in place by the rubber boot covering that connection.

Hi again Nickster,<br />If you have good continuity on the kill wire all the way to the pack and ground it and the engine keeps running, then I would say that you have a bad power pack.<br />Have fun

Jumper the black yellow at power pack and ground to block, if engine shuts down, pack is good. Did you check black yellow wire and black at switch, black goes to engine ground, switch open engine running, switch closed engine stopped. Some old evinrude had battery powered pack, which would have different switch.

Thanks to every one for there help on this project. Found that the ground wire was broke or had slipped out of the harness on the motor side. thanks again much appreciated.
