Ok, my buddy just watched me rebuild my '61 10hp seahorse, so now he wants to pay me to help him get his 1982 Johnson 15 hp running after 15 years. I know the "how to awake a sleeping outboard" thread by heart. My question is, how different is his motor from my '61? I'm assuming that changing points/coils, carb rebuild, impeller, etc would be basically the same. Anything I should watch out for?

No points, CD ignition. Get an OEM shop manual if you're going to attempt anything serious.

Its alot different, less maint.parts.You NEED to change impeller, and gear oil.Pull the carb off the motor, disassemble,if the interior parts are questionable as to being OK ,get a rebuild kit, soak the carb in carb cleaner, blow through all passages to insure all gunk is gone.I suggest you get some fogging fluid and spray into the cylinders ,pull it over a few times with plugs screwed in just a couple turns, wire off ,,clean the plugs, reinstall, get a tank of fresh gas and run it easy for an hour ,checking for pumping, heat, noise etc.You may also want to pull the thermostat out and check for any binding, put in hot then cold water.Dont try running with the old impeller, its likely dry and they break sending pieces into the water passages

thanks guys, got it running today. With new plugs it actually had nice blue spark on both plugs, so went to work on the carb and she fired right up. thanks.
