1982 johnson 60hp metal shavings in lower unit

Took out my lower unit to change the gearcase seals because I had water in my lower unit. I found small metal shavings in the exhaust port what are these metal shavings and can something be damaged in the motor ?

Quite possibly. Have you checked the compression? If it is low on one or more cylinders, you have serious troubles.

I have not checked I will check today can I check with the lower unit off?
