rdischar,

I do not know what year your engine is but, if it has through hub exhaust, what you are seeing is normal.

If you do not know much about the boat. I would do three things.

1. Buy a manual for the engine.

2. Service the water pump.

3. Decarb. the engine.

i looked up the yesr by the model # and it is a 1982 it has 2 holes about 1 1/2 ft above the prop where it feels like exhaust comes out. is the oil normal also or does it have a does it have a bad seal.

the serial # is j5680201 and the model # is j70elcnb. there is also a very small amount of vertical play in the prop shaft, are the bearings bad.

That's exhaust/unburned fuel. Don't worry about it unless it's clean and clear, or milky.

rdischar, The two holes you mentioned are exhaust relief holes. You will get some exhaust out these as well as the prop hub. While running you will get some waterflow out the reliefs as well if cooling system is up to par.The vertical play in prop shaft could be a problem depending on the severity.Enough could cause prop shaft seals to leak and is indication of worn beraing or bearings.Insure you are checking for this with prop removed to eliminate any play that may be in prop hub or spline.I would highly recommend ,as suggested above that you have the lower unit serviced and install new waterpump kit.If used regularly they should be serviced at least bi-annually.Get a professional honest opinion from a service tech on condition of prop shaft bearings.I could help if I could see motor, or you were able to obtain total vertical movement in thousanths via dial indicator and relay info.
