I owne a 1982 15hp johnson freshwater outboard. The model number is
J15RCNC. when i am out on the lake and the motor is at full throttle or close it slams into neutral. I am wondering if there is a gear stripped or an adjustment thing?
thanks for all your time and help

Does it go right back into gear sort of like hitting something in the water?

First of all stop running the engine till you get this figured out, slamming in and out of gear is very very bad.

It could be an adjustment or more likely your clutch dog is worn.

A lower has 3 gears, pinion, forward, reverse, these are always moving if the engine is running, the clutch dog slides back and forth between the gears to get forward reverse.

There are 2-3 "ears" on the dog that get rounded over time, once they are round enough it will pop out of gear, rotate and catch again.

First of all I would drain the lower and see what you have, look for water(milky looking) or metal shavings.

If the oil is clean you can try adjusting the shift cable at the motor, if that doesn't help then you probably need to change the clutch dog.

You are suppose to change the entire gear set but I think you could get by with just the dog.

Yup.....clutch dog, cradle, forward gear....... You will have to dissemble the lower unit to tell. Then make sure your shift height is correct.

Before you disassemble the lower unit, make sure you get an OMC manual to complete the task. They can be found at reduced price on ebay.
