No tourque wrench rest assured I will get one now. Thanks for the info on the taper. It is related to this post being a possible cause and pertenant info that could be used for a solution to the problem. I think i have a bad habit of a heavy hand and not following direction My bad. Those 60 HP covers are from a fresh water engine and there as clean as a new day. I bought a stator from Brandon boats and he seems to be a good dealer on ebay

One other thing: probe your threaded holes with a mini-pick to make sure there's no old RTV down in there, then with a Q-tip to wick out any liquid, because anything like that in the threaded holes can prevent you tightening bolts down all the way.

Just woke up thanks yea I will cear all the holes. It came to me this AM. By me tightening the center bolts of the mercury 70 HP exhaust plate and not following the recommende torque pattern, The plate is being held hostage locked down preventing the proper seat of the plate leaving a gap on the tapered side of the plate causing water to get by the seal. To explain futher. The middle bolt of the bowed side of the plate I believe should be half toqued first to bring the plate into position making it flush and centered with the divider plate serface and block. Then the rest of the bolts can be tightend in a buterfly pattern or the bowed side first center bolt up, then center bolt down followed by a butterfly pattern from center outwards. I have the tourque specs but there is no listed sequence on the info page you sent. 1/4 inch bolts 115 in lbs 5/16 bolts 120 n lbs

Yeah, my crappy SELOC manual says to "follow the sequence" also, but then shows a diagram with the wrong cover. Start at the center, work your way up a bit, then down a bit, then do the upper and lower ends last. Torque to 1/3 in turn, then 2/3 in turn, then final third; then go over each one again at full torque. That's me plan, anyway.

sounds like a good one I,ll be getting to mine in a bit. The cuved end is the key to getting it on and inline (centered) Best of luck to you them gaskets are expensive

Ok so i noticed I had a bad needle valve which has been replaced. Also all the gaskets (3) have been installed for the baffle. I am still getting quite a bit of steam off the water coming out of the pee hole. Is this a normal amount? It also has not stalled on a 15 min test so the next one is on the water tomo, the same thing happened last time but this time hopefully it wont stall after 20 min of boating.
