1982 Sea Ray 190 Coming back to life!

Well, after having been over in the restoration forum for a while now, while re-doing the transom core, stringers, foam and deck, I am now ready to jump back into putting the heart back into the boat. I am going to be replacing the gimbal housing, motor and outdrive back onto the boat. I am trying to get all of the gaskets that I will need ahead of time, so that I will not have to stop and wait once I get going. So far, I know I need the gimbal housing mounting gasket, goes between the gimbal housing and the boat. I already have the outdrive mounting gasket, that goes between the bell housing and upperhousing. Is this all I need?
Also, when removing the boat, I had what looked like mouse ears ground into the transom wood at the top of the outdrive hole. I would assume this is done for the steering. Does this need to be done again? Thanks!

Awwww man, I am sorry, I guess I am just sooo excited about getting back on the water, I forgot to put that info in there. The engine is a 1987 3.0L and the outdrive is a pre-alpha outdrive. The only thing that I am having to do to complete the pairing of these two is change out the exhaust riser, and drill/tap two more holes in the exhaust manifold itself. There anything else you can think of that I would need?

Okay, so I still need the info from my previous posts, but I also have some other questions. Today, I was looking at the transom assembly and I noticed that the shift assembly that came from the previous motor, a 2.5L with a bad cylinder was still attached to the transom assembly. I was going to simply remove this and use the shift assembly that is on the new motor, a 1986 3.0L with the shift assembly on the valve cover. BUT there is a pivot shaft on the old shift assembly that pivots on a body that the trim pump has lines that run to. Can I cut this pivot shaft out and keep that cylinder up there and move the cables over to the shift assembly on the valve cover?
What is that body up there on the old shift assembly that the trim pump has lines running to? Thats all for now! HOPEFULLY I will be on the water at least ONCE before I have to winterize it! Thanks!

I believe it's a valve to keep you from putting the drive in gear while it's trimmed up? Dunno for sure. Mine has the line you're speaking of, but it wasn't connected to anything, and I can't figure out where it's supposed to go. Everything works without it though, so I haven't worried too much about it.

Okay, so now I REALLY need some help! I noticed that on the right side of my upper unit, there was a TON of silicone that was gobbed onto the upper. I didnt think this was right, so I started to pick at it. It actually came off pretty easily and revealed a hole into my shift cable cavity. I was told this hole is to be plugged with what is called a Welch plug. So, I bought one and tried to put it in by using a center punch and smacking the plug with that center punch. Well when I did that half of the cast iron ring that you smack the plug into broke off!!!!! ARGH!!!! What am I going to do? IS there anything that I CAN do? Or do I have to replace the WHOLE upper??!??!? There is a pic of the hole I am referring to!

Just a hint here, this is an old thread (Of yours) and is about a completely different problem.
When you have a new question, post a new thread so your new question doesn't get lost in the middle of an old one.
BEFORE you do start a new thread, go up to the Adults Only sticky and have a look at the first link in it. Then post with the the needed info.

As far as that welch plug. Under it is a pipe plug screwed into the housing. If it's still there and doesn't leak you have no problem. The welch plug kind of protects the pipe plug. If it's gone and the threads are goine, you may need a new housing.
The Sillicone over everything means who ever put the drive on last, didn't have a clue what they were doing, or the desire to get a new gasket set (8 bucks) and hard to tell what else is wrong.

Ayuh,...

That Welch Plug can always be Epoxied in,...
They're usually tapped in with a socket the diameter of the hole,.. Not a Center Punch,...
But,... Anyways,..

Have you downloaded a set of Manuals yet,..??

Your boat being an 87,... Should have an Alpha 1,... Not the Pre-alpha in the picture...

Yeah, it is a Pre Alpha, and I think I actually may go for a Alpha one that a guy has that is close to me! I was told that since I ran the outdrive in my driveway, without and lube in it, that I probably fried the upper. And since I not longer have a good casting, I may as well just upgrade the whole dang thing. Hell, everything else is new, why not the outdrive as well??? So, I got the boat back tonight from gettin a new interior, and gonna prolly take the outdrive off sometime this weekend, and take it out to the guy.......argh! It just keeps coming!!!!
