Got a lot done today, Built a motor stand using the design on site (forget whose post but credit goes to him). Motor mounted on stand and moved out of the way. Cut a portion of transom lip away and used a long chisel to break out that glue, and got the cap popped today, Need some helping hands to get it off the boat though. Braced Hull before popping, will upload some photos. I am open to constructive criticism and even the occasion "holy crap you shouldn't have done that" replies



Found the post where i got the plans for outboard motor stand from and wanted to be sure the credit was given where credit was due

Made a few minor modifications to suit my mounting needs (tripled 2X6, taller stand, etc) but without his base design to work off of I would spent hours figuring out how to do it.

Not much to do today, still waiting for some friends to come help me carry the cap out. Did finally receive my repair manual for outboard, so got my lower unit dropped and am now confident in what i need to buy parts wise. Was hoping it just needed a new Impeller, But im going to have to go with the full water pump rebuild kit

This Pin caused me more trouble that i could have imagined to disengage shift rod, but its done!

Hello JDA. I'm a newbie but I have read more than I have done to my boat so far. I have a tip for your cradle or your hull support. I used these blocks and split them so I could snug them against the hull. Used a screw to hold it in place after I adjusted them. If I shake the hull, the bottom doesn't move hardly at all. Just the rim had a little movement. I used four of them on each side. Again, I am a super newbie, but a pro told me it should work. Its REALLY easy and cost scrape wood. I tried 2x4's acrossed the top but now i understand that it is not sufficient. The bottom edges need support not just the top. If not supported, it affects the steering. I supported the bottom and it made a HUGE difference in support of the whole boat. Good luck on your boat dude. You'll have a boat that a factory couldn't afford to build when your done.

Had some friends and neighbors show up today to help remove the cap, Good news is the stern section appears to be in very good shape, I believe my friends dad stored it properly for drainage but when my friend got it, he had it parked bow-down. and water was able to pool toward the front. I will know more after cleaning it up and doing some exploration. Few more pics to follow of the cap. I put cap on saw horses upside-down so i could work on replacing all the wiring (just for my own peace of mind. It is a tri-hull, and with how it sits on trailer I believe it is supported sufficiently, let me know what ya all think.

Yeah i went down to local Marina and stood around talking to people there about the boat projects, some showed interest in seeing what i was doing and I couldn't resist the urge to say "come on over and you can even help!" lol between them and calling a neighbor to help we moved it and flipped it with 4 people. It is pretty heavy because everything is built together, seat supports, dual consoles, live well etc. but worked out OK. Are you asking for pics of the underside of cap or the top side?

Will take some pics of cap later today or tomorrow, wore myself out getting this transom out...what do you guys think can I use the old transom as a template? view pics below! Top portion was rotted bottom 2-3" was not, although was wet so became very hard to remove, I ended up using an 1-1/4" spade bit on my drill and turned it into shavings to get it out, I am sure there would be an easier way but, I was just experimenting. Pic 1 & 4 is what is left of the bottom several inches of transom, pic 5 is how the top portion came out. the template idea was just humor because there is no transom left to use!

by request here are a couple more pics of bottom side of cap. Got wiring bundled up and tied to steering wheel so they didn't drag when we moved it so looks a tad sloppy. My plan is to completely rewire it prior to putting it back on just for my own peace of mind.

So even sick, I couldn't stay away...Mostly clean-up work but I have a serious question to ask. It appears that the outer stringers and foam are in great shape. Foam is clean and dry, I did take a core sample in a couple places. Even the center stringer is not in really bad shape overall Appears to only be where they placed the access for live well plumbing, and put a drain hole (unsealed, and just a plain metal cover in the deck that any rot started to form. Ok so experts...Did I luck out, and only have to replace part of my 2 primary stringers....Or is this the wishful thinking of an untrained eye?

Inner stringer/foam looks solid and dry, I took a couple core samples that came out dry as well Picture of the main stringer on other end, can see where the rot is again
this one is a picture of the deck plywood and stringer in the aft bilge area, where I said it looked to be solid still....can see the 30 year old ply still looks pristine to my eye

So what do you guys think, should i still completely gut...or should i just repair the 2 main stringers, and make sure everyhting else if water tight and redeck it? Any opinions welcomed

Could definitely use an experienced opinion on this , so I know what my next step is. I don't want to do something that doesn't need to be done, as it will save money, but if you guys think it should be completely gutted, I will do that. So any advice appreciated so I can get started either way.

You know I'm not a pro at this, as you have posted in my thread, so take what I say for what it is worth. It is my personal opinion that you go ahead and gut the thing while you're there. That way you be 100% certain that the boat is in the absolute best condition it can be. If you leave the apparently solid stringers, there's no telling if/when they will finally breakdown on you, thus putting you into another half restore. Again, it is my personal opinion, but if it were my boat I would do it while I was already there and then forget about it for the remainder of the time that I own the boat.

Pro or not, it is a second opinion....so far my thread hasn't really gained any of the guru attention so I will take your advice, I thought the same, but part of me (the cheap side) was hoping lol. ok well off to gut a boat I guess!

I would be half for gutting it while in there and half for letting it be, I mean if you 100% feel they are solid, then of course dont bother... Its tough obviously for me to tell without standing there... But ive always considered the if it aint broke dont fix it mantra in things like this... But on the other hand like said if you plan on keeping her for a long time, then go for it and replace em, as you will never, ever, ever, ever have to do this again...

Thanks for the pics of the underside of cap... I guess they really didnt want the nose of it to break... Lol...would be interesting to see how they got that glass to lay down with all those tight angles... Oh but I guess they would have chopper gunned it

Dont be disheartened that the "pros" havent posted they are following literaly DOZENS of threads, alot of action at the "dry dock" this time of year... Be patient and trust me if they feel your doing something wrong theyll let you know but lookin good so far! Keep it up! Good luck and cheers!
