I have a new to me Mercury 150. The serial number is 6313170 which I believe means it is a 1983 Mercury Black Max 150hp V-6 2.0L ELPT (long shaft, electric start, power trim).

The manual that came with it is a 90-97658 (no dash for revision number). The service manual index PDF indicates that the correct manual is a 90-97658--3. Is my manual out of date and do I need to purchase a newer one?

Also since I don't know the history of the motor I would like to replace the water pump, themostats and popet valves. The Mercury Parts catalog shows 2 different gear housing for the V-150, one with a drive shaft nut and one without. The water pump kit for without a drive shaft nut is 96148A4, while the with a drive shaft nut is 42579A4.

Is there any way of determining which gear housing I have without removing it first? The manual doesn't show a drive shaft nut at all. It does discuss a E-Z Shift gear housing and a Cam-Shift gear housing. From the description in the manual I have a E-Z Shift gear housing.

If I'm understanding the iboats Mercury parts section correctly, it shows a Sierra 18-3316 as the correct water pump kit, but that crosses to a Mercury 46-78400A2.

What's the correct water pump rebuild kit for my motor?

Thanks!

only way ta know for sure is pull tha gear case unless ya know for sure it is original (will be no nut).... if it has a small pin stickin' out of tha top of tha drive shaft it is a "no nut" type commonly referred to as a "pre load" gear case...one "usual clue" is plastic inserts in tha water pick up holes on tha side of tha case but no promise its completely true.... pre loads went away somewhere in tha mid ta late 80's... can't remember exactly when.....
