I'm having some trouble with a 1983 25 hp. I picked this motor up for parts, but since it only appeared to need a waterpump and spacer bearing I decided to see if I could get it running. It had overheated in the past.
I've completely cleaned out every water passage (twice) and installed a new water pump kit. The motor pumps lots of water and a strong stream comes out the tell-tale. However, it still seems to run hot in my test barrel. The head gets so hot at idle I can't touch it for more than a second or two and the pee stream is warm. It is definately hotter idling than my 1987 20 hp or 1988 30 hp. Any ideas why it is so hot? I'm running Champion QL77JC4 spark plugs. Also, I had the armature off to replace the spacer bearing so the linkage may not be in sync.
Any ideas?
