Hello all .
i have a 1983 omc 3.0 l 140 hp model 302fthrcng .
History
I got the boat knowing it would not go into gear trouble shot and found stripped water pump shaft .
replaced shaft and water pump assy .
I reassembled started doing shift adjustment i have engine running warmed up .
On shift converter box slid into forward marked went back to neutral then to reverse
The problem is shift from neutral to forward is about 1 inch and neutral to reverse is 1.75 inches
which is way out of spec using sealoc instruction
where have i gone wrong i have never had boat in water so history is vague .
spec is calling for 21/32 minimum travel
thank you

Yes, the shift rack in the lower unit must be timed correctly before the cables are threaded into the converter. Even then, the neutral position of the converter shift arm has to be synched with the helm shifter.

your in luck I just re-built my upper and lower unit for the first time and did it in record time.
your issue is simple. Your rack gear in the shift housing on the lower unit is off 1 or more teeth

leave the shifter in neutral, put out drive in neutral. put

cam in converter box in neutral range. keep setting pinion gear until cable wedges line up with cam in converter box.
do not over think it. just do it twice and you should have it

an update found shift rack assy unscrewed some . Tightened and connected to shift adapter housing and ran lower housing drive shaft using a drill seems much better
