On my 83 Avanti 3.0 stinger outdrive, I'd like to replace the water pump,as a preventive measure. Looking in my Sealock manual, it says I need to remove the outdrive, just to change the water pump! Is that really nessicary, for something that should be a regular maintenence job? Art

yes, you need to pull the lower unit, and on a stringer, that is easiest done on the bench with the drive off.

plenty of good videos here http://sterndrive.info/

you should be able to pull the drive in about 20 minutes, pulling the cable from the ESA will be the hardest part

be careful, that lower shift cable is easily damaged and costs $650

you should be inspecting your ball gears every year as well.

It can be done on the boat ... but you're pretty much working upside down, and removing all the heavy stuff anyway. Like Scott said, the best option is to yank it and work on the bench.
