I recently picked up a 1983 35 horse Johnson tiller with a pull start. My question is simple. What specifically do I need to do to drop the lower and change the water pump.

I have a '62 fisherman that required removing the power-head, and I have a '72 9.5 that I understand you just drop it and the water tube should stay attached to the top end. I assume the '83 will go like the '72 but I'm not sure when to detach the shift rod.

I have a Seloc manual that came with the motor but I'd rather just wing it for what I anticipate to be a simple job. If it's not simple now would be a great time to let me know before I get myself in trouble.

OK, try this.
Remove the water intake screens, #29.
Remove the shift rod connector, #66 and the shift rod keeper #77. Be careful to note how this is on the shaft, has a taper to it, and don't loose it as it is small.
Remove nut #54 and washer #53.
Remove 4 gear case housing screws #73, and the lower unit should drop down.
I think that should do it.

Thank you, I did not know that you had to remove the screen and do any disassembly before you could pull the leg. I guess I will take the time to review the manual (although I doubt that the Seloc manual will be of much help, it's too general).

On the contrary, pages 7-55 and 7-56 of Seloc #1302 manual for 1973-89 give detailed instructions on disconnecting the shift rod. And page 7-57 covers putting it back together. Probably more than you will find in the factory manual. Just gotta take the time to sort out what applies to your particular motor.

Thanks, F_R. I skimmed the manual last night and saw a lot of diagrams for the lower unit of a 2-4 hp motor.

I regret coming off so negatively, it's just that I have done a few impellers before and didn't want to make a research project out of this. Of course I will end up making a project out of this if I'm already spending time here figuring out if it's safe to just dive in.
