I have a 1983 35HP Evinrude which I need to remove lower unit to replace seals and water pump. I have the unit separated about 4 inches and is hung up on shift linkage. I have separated linkage from lower unit bottom but it does not slide past the water pump housing. I can not find out where to separate shift linkage from the top half of motor. My old 70HP was under carburetor. Where do you separate the linkage on the 35 HP? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Behind the intake screens there is a nut that connects the top shift shaft to the lower shift shaft. You need to loosen the top nut..turn the nut while holding the bottom nut in place. When you get it seperated, you will see a little plastic thing on the tip of the upper shift shaft, you need to take that off carefully (it has a slit in it) so that the upper nut can slide off. Then you can drop the lower unit off.
