My uncle came to me today when he was having trouble with his motor, a 1983 Evinrude 35hp .

It was pretty simple to see it was running lean, tried the easiest solution first, turned the idle needle valve open a quarter turn.
Started it up and it ran fine, with none of the sneezing or dying he had been experiencing. Turned the screw back to where it was and within 20 seconds it would die.

Checked my Clymer manual to find the recommended turns of the screw, but can't find a chart anywhere in the book. :(

So what's it supposed to be, 3/4 turn? 1 full turn? 1.5 turns?

It was dying at 3/4 turn.
ok at 1 turn.
I put it at 1 and 1/8 turns.

Is this ok?

It probably needs a carb rebuild, but he is old and stubborn, won't do it, and won't let me tear it apart.

I usually start at a turn and a half out roscoe. Get the engine running and warm, put it in gear and set the idle in gear from there. If the engine idles good in gear at 1 1/8 turn out, should be OK.

The service manuals (OEM's) will give a rough starting point but it's up to the person doing the adjustment to fine tune it.

Thank OBJ.
I will tell him he can back it out further if needed.
We did take it for a short spin and it did accellerate very well, not like before.

He thinks his son in law was messing with it last week, as it was running fine 2 weeks ago.
