1983 50 HP 4cyl won't start

My 1983 50HP 4cyl died while idling at the boat ramp. Had run it all day without any problems but it wouldn't restart. I inspected some of the electric system and found the insulation on the two yellow wires from the stator had deteriorated and the wires looked corroded. Same for one of the wires from the trigger plus this wire was broken. Replaced all these wires but still won't start. Get spark for 2-3 seconds when cranking but no more spark after that. Replaced the switchbox but still same problem. Any help appreciated.

If no one has any suggestions as to what the problem may be, any info on how to check the stator and trigger to see if they are good and working?
